Kitty Boitnott:

Are you a teacher who's feeling stressed out and overwhelmed? Do you worry that you're feeling symptoms of burnout or are you sure you've already gotten there? Have you started to dream of doing some other kind of job or perhaps pursuing a whole different career, but you don't know what else you're even qualified to do? You don't know how to start a job search. You just feel stuck. If that sounds like you, I promise you're not alone. My name is Kitty Boitnott. I'm a career transition and job search coach and I specialize in helping burnt out teachers just like you deal not only with the stress and overwhelm of your day-to-day job, but to consider what other careers might be out there waiting for you. Join me for"Teachers in Transition." In some episodes I'll be speaking to stress management techniques and how you can manage your stress on a day to day basis. In other episodes I'll be talking about career transition. What tools do you need to be successful in a job search when you're moving from one career into a totally different track? These are questions that you need answers to and I can help you find those answers. My name is Kitty Boitnott. Welcome to"Teachers in Transition." Hi, this is Kitty Boitnott of"Teachers in Transition," the Podcast and the YouTube Channel, and this week I want to talk about stress management strategy that you may not think of as a strategy, but I contend that it's still an important practice if you want to be intentional about managing and relieving your stress. Now I've talked about the importance of staying hydrated, eating well for good nutrition, of the importance of getting the sleep that you need, getting the exercise and physical activity that you need for your body to feel well. The importance of breathing. And the last time I talked about stress management, I mentioned the importance of incorporating a meditation practice in your day to day routine, or at least we connecting with your higher power through prayer. If that practice works for you better than meditation. And today I'm going to cover the seventh strategy that I have ever in my ebook,*Stressed, Stretched, and Just Plain Overwhelmed.* And that is to not forget to have fun. We are so invested in work these days and we are so caught up in the day to day drama of what's going on in the world and I won't kid you. There is stuff going on in the world that we are all needing to be attention to and being invested in and feeling called to do something about in some way. But that does not negate the importance of you're taking some time out to disengage from the drama and to have time for yourself to just have fun. Now. Fun is a relative term. I have a friend whose idea of fun is running 50 miles or not 50 maybe, but she's a runner. She runs at least 10 miles a day. That's not my idea of fun. She loves to go hiking with her family. She would probably hike 50 miles, uh, in a couple of days and camp out overnight as is not sound like fun to me. I'm an indoor kind of girl. So my idea of fun is just an hour or two where I don't have to do anything but sit down and read a good book or watch a good movie or go to the movies. I love going to the movies. That's, that's fun for me. Back when I was younger, I used to go, I used to take shag dance lessons. I love, I love North Carolina Beach Music and I love to watch and also to practice the Shag dance moves. They are very smooth and fluid and if you're watching a couple who've practiced for a long time and they're really good at it, I mean it's just phenomenal. It's kind of like swinging or in any of the other kinds of dancing that couples can do that you can enjoy watching them do it. I love music. I love to listen to music. So there are lots of things that I can do that don't require me to go outdoors at all. Where I'm having a lot of fun. I have two dachshunds and I love watching them run and play and I love it when they're having fun. So I have fun watching them have fun. They're not worried about what's going to happen tomorrow and they don't have it to do list that they have to check off this and that and the other. They don't have a hidden agenda. They're just, they're just in the moment. Totally, completely, 100% in the moment and when you're having fun, that's what you should be. Totally 100% in the moment. It's difficult for some people to disengage to that extent, but that's why you need perhaps these days more than ever to be intentional about it. So what does that mean? That means you need to set aside some time each day just for you so that you can do something fun for you. It means doing something each week for a little longer period. Commit that you're going to do something just for fun this weekend. When was the last time you took a vacation? So you might need to be planning your next vacation and make it soon. If it's been awhile. Science even says that for brain health, we need to have fun. We need to disengage from work. It's better for our brain. It's better for our bodies. It's definitely better for our spirit. So when you are thinking of ways to distress or to better manage your stress or to relieve your stress from the day to day grind of work and everything else that's going on in the world, don't forget the importance of having fun, fun as an individual, fun as a family, Fun with your friends, fun, whatever that is for you. So that's it for this week. I want your, your homework assignment is have fun, find something to do today that will be fun for you. I hope you'll be back next week.
